Our friends over at The Sorry Girls told us they have been seeing this ‘Mushroom Lamp’ trending ALL over Pinterest and TikTok! It is such a beautiful home decor trend that fits with a lot of different styles, but buying it first hand is pretty expensive and as soon as they saw it, they knew it was DIY-able.
Step 1 : Covering Your Surface
The best part of this trend is the smooth glass finish on all these lamps. To recreate this look, adding paint to the inside of the lamp to replicate the opaque colour while still giving the illusion of tinted glass. In order to do this, you will need to mask off the outside of the glass. With painter's tape and scrap paper, cover up the outside of the bowl and vase.
Step 2: Painting
Now that everything is covered up, it is ready to be painted on the inside. For this project, using a spray paint so that it can be layered with very light coats creating the smoothest finish possible (avoiding any paint streaks and splotches, especially when light shines through it).
**Note - Always spray paint outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Use a drop cloth or some sort of protection like newspaper to avoid mist getting on surroundings. While spraying, keep the can at the same distance from the vase the whole time in a back-and-forth motion to avoid drips
For the retro look, The Sorry Girls chose the Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Multi-Purpose Paint And Primer in Satin Rustic Orange. But this can be totally customizable to fit your space!
Step 3: Lighting
To create the actual lamp part of this DIY, The Sorry Girls repurposed some lighting wiring from a light found at a local thrift store. Using some thin metal wire, create a canopy for the light to hang from the edge of the vase. Ensure that the lamp is using an LED light, as it doesn’t emit heat and won’t affect the paint finish inside your lamp.
Final Result
Now all you have to do is place the bowl on top of the light and your lamp is complete!
