Show off your DIY skills and be the talk of your next dinner party with this magical, DIY floating wine holder by Remarkable Woodworks.
Step 1: Using a measuring tape, measure 14 1/8” from the left side of the wood board. Make a mark on the edge of the board and make a 27-degree cut (make sure the blade is cutting so the long end of the board measures to 14 1/8”).
Note: You can also turn the board over and measure down 13 ¾” and then use a straight edge to draw a line from the 14 1/8” mark to the 13 ¾” mark. This will give you a 27-degree angle on the edge of the board.
Step 2: Cut a 1 ½” hole, 3 1/8” from the uncut side/top of the board. Make a measurement line 3 1/8” from the top and 1 5/8” from the side. This will create an “X” and that will be the middle of your 1 ½” circle.
Step 3: Sand the board using 150-grit sandpaper. If using a light-coloured stain, or wood such as pine, birch or maple, use the Varathane Premium Wood Conditioner. This will help to avoid blotchiness.
Step 4: Use a tack cloth to remove any dust and then apply one coat of Varathane Ultimate Wood Stain in the colour of your choice.
Step 5: Shake the aerosol can of Varathane Triple Thick One Coat Clear Finish vigorously for one minute. Keep the can 8-12” from the surface and keep it in motion while spraying. Apply the finish, switching angles and positions to apply it in all the nooks and crannies, and then wait 1 hour to dry.
Step 6: Carefully place wine bottle into hole and use the centre of gravity to allow the bottle to float over the 27-degree cut.
